SUMMARY

Director, Health and Safety, Bilingual

LOCATION : Burlington

SUMMARY

The position of Director Health & Safety is responsible for setting the strategic direction for Health and Safety within the corporation. The incumbent will provide direction to Cogeco for all matters relating to Health and Safety, policies, programs and procedures and ensure the corporation is compliant with Laws, Regulations and Standards relating to Health and Safety.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Act as expert advisor for the interpretation and enforcement of Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) laws, policies, processes and standards in force.
  2. Recommend and see to the implementation of internal OH&S policies, processes and standards.
  3. Develop and recommend new work accident prevention strategies. Develop strategies to communicate and issue Emergency and Fire Safety measures required by laws, standards and safety codes.
  4. Together with existing Health & Safety Committees (H&SC), make sure current prevention programs are updated and consult with participants on all matters to be submitted to them. Develop relevant strategies.
  5. Act as Management representative in some H&SC, and act as advisor with Workplace H&SC.
  6. Prepare or purchase the content of training to be given to managers and employees, and ensure they are trained so they can take en charge of Health & Safety in the workplace.
  7. Ensure audits are performed to measure any gaps with current laws and policies. Develop action plans to correct deficiencies and support operational managers’ Health & Safety goals.
  8. Coordinate or perform inspections required to validate and measure the impact of Health & Safety programs. Raise managers and employees’ awareness of Health & Safety and Ergonomics issues. Perform risk assessments and hazard analyses as needed. Provide concerned managers and employees with recommendations or guidance.
  9. Together with interveners from the HR Department, see to the overall administration of corrective actions (administrative revisions, contestations, medical expertises, etc.). Coordinate the Company’s decisions and interventions with regards to claims made with the CSST and WSIB. Supervise all files so as to minimize lost time and costs and ensure prompt return to work. Represent the Company before administrative courts.
  10. Keep current on developments and participate in industrial committees or with private or public agencies regarding the best Health & Safety practices.
  11. Write the contents of memos, bulletins, articles and newsletters to be issued to employees.
  12. Make sure all Health & Safety records required by law and internal procedures are kept up to date.
  13. Ensure mandatory first aid services are implemented, in accordance with law requirements.
  14. Produce all required statistical data, to support projects and decisions as well as analyze trends and the results of prevention efforts.
  15. Design and organize all internal activities to promote Health & Safety.
  16. Represent or ensure Cogeco participation in Canadian Standards or organizations that provide policy and direction for Health and Safety policies and practices
  17. As part of their work, employees must take all necessary measures to ensure their own health and safety, and that of their co-workers and the public in general. They must use available personal protective equipment at all times, and comply with all Health & Safety instructions, guidelines, policies and procedures issued by the Company.
  18.
