Tax on Internet services
The facts

The CRTC is looking at the possibility of adding a third levy on the revenues of Internet service providers like Cogeco to finance the production of Canadian multimedia content on the Web. At first glance, this has nothing to do with television. But, the potential beneficiaries are the same producers and broadcasters that are eligible for the LPIF and are asking for fee-for-carriage.

Because the CRTC is not currently authorized to regulate Internet service providers, it has just petitioned the Federal Court of Appeal to claim the right.

Nothing has crystallized yet on this issue and we continue to monitor the situation.

What Cogeco thinks
Cogeco is opposed to this potential levy. Taxing Internet access is against the very principle of the Internet – to give everyone access to information.

And that’s not all. The CRTC has plans for more levies
