What does Internet usage mean?

Internet usage is the amount of data your computer sends to and receives from the Internet, measured in bytes. Every time you download a song, upload a picture, surf the Web or send or receive email, a certain number of bytes of data are being transferred to or from your computer.

Why does Cogeco charge for extra usage?

With so much to do online these days, it’s more important than ever to have an Internet service that helps make the most of your online experience. So whether you’re downloading music, sharing photos, playing games or just emailing friends, we want to make sure that you’re getting the speed, security and reliability that suit you best.

All our Internet packages have a monthly transfer capacity limit (bit cap). In order to keep providing you with the best service possible, customers using more bit cap will be charged an extra fee.  

You will only ever be charged if you go over your limit. If this is the case, you will notice an additional line on your invoice that indicates the exact number of Gigabytes used and the cost associated with that specific usage. Keeping track of usage this way allows us to keep our prices competitive and helps you choose the plan that accurately reflects your usage.

Tracking your Internet usage

Your Cogeco High Speed Internet package comes with a monthly usage limit, measured in gigabytes, or billions of bytes. Your limit should reflect your needs. To help you track and manage your Internet usage, we've developed a tool that calculates the amount of data your computer sends or receives every month, in other words, your monthly Internet usage.

You can monitor your current monthly usage, view your usage history, see a history of notification regarding usage you have been sent and more, all to help you manage your Internet usage. This tool provides three months of usage history, so you can track whether your Internet usage is stable, increasing or decreasing, and adjust your package accordingly. To access the tool, please log in to your My Account profile at cogeco.ca/MyAccount.

Internet Usage and Your Wireless Home Network

If you have a wireless home network (also known as WLANs or Wi-Fi networks), make sure it is secured against unauthorized outside access. With an unprotected network, you may be letting unwanted guests access the Internet, download or exchange data on your monthly usage limit. Should this lead to usage beyond what’s included in package, you will be responsible for the payment of the extra GB used.
