What do I do if I am a hacking victim?
If you are a victim of hacking (an unknown person has accessed, or tried to access your computer over the Internet), follow these steps to correct the problem:
Use our free Cogeco online virus scanner to ensure that your computer is not already infected by a virus or other types of malicious software.
If your firewall generates a report about a computer attack you can send the report to firstname.lastname@example.org. Cogeco will determine if the user is a client and will take corrective measures.
Once your computer is no longer at risk, download Cogeco’s Security Services, or at the very least activate your firewall. Please note that if you install Cogeco’s Security Services on a computer that is already infected that we cannot guarantee that your computer will function properly.
Can other people access my files or read my emails?
The cable modems provided by Cogeco are specifically configured for maximum security. Your privacy is protected.
However, no protection is perfect. As malware is becoming increasingly more sophisticated, we recommend that you install Cogeco’s Security Services.
What safety precautions should I take when surfing the Internet?
It is recommended that you take the following precautions to protect your system when you are connected to the Internet:
- Deactivate file-sharing and printer-sharing.
- Use firewall software.
- Make sure that you have anti-virus software and that it is up to date.
- Never open files before scanning them with an anti-virus program, even if they are from someone you know.
How do I choose a secure password?
There are many great ways to create and keep your passwords secure:
1. Change your password regularly
Some people never change their passwords. While it may not be practical to change your password every month, making a habit of changing your login passwords two or three times per year would help keep your accounts and personal information secure.
2. Use a secret system to create unique but easily remembered passwords
All your passwords can start with a magic word and number (for example, your cat’s name and your nephew’s age: Mittens8). Then, add something to represent the specific service (for example, the first four letters of the service: Mittens8MyAc for My Account). As you can see, using a secret system can increase your security without making passwords impossible to remember.
Making a habit of changing your secret system and passwords every four or six months will give you a new kind of peace of mind, in a time when passwords are as powerful as signatures.
3. Change your password when you think your account might have been compromised
If you think your account might have been compromised, change your password and communicate with the concerned company to share your suspicion. Losing control of your online services is no different from losing your credit card. It is essential to act quickly!
Why is Parental Control (Web Filtering) necessary?
Parents may want to protect their children from inappropriate online content. Parental Controls block access to this inappropriate content, to better control Internet use.
Web filtering is also used in offices to limit the types of websites employees can see.
