FAQ Internet

What is the difference between POP and IMAP protocols?

IMAP (Internet Messaged Access Protocol) and POP (Post Office Protocol)are two different e-mail protocols.

POP downloads emails from a server for permanent local storage on a computer for example. IMAP leaves them on the server which allows you to use different computers/devices to check your e-mail. Your e-mail will always be synchronized and will instantly appear in your webmail inbox no matter which device you use.

Cogeco supports both of these protocols but recommends using IMAP.
