What is an IP address?
Every device connected to the Internet has an IP Address. An IP address is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to the Internet to help identify its location within the network.
IP version 4 (IPv4) is the fourth revision of the Internet Protocol, and is the first version to be widely deployed on the Internet. An IPv4 address is a code, consisting of four sets of numbers from 0 to 255 separated by three dots, which identifies a particular computer on the Internet. Every computer, whether it be a Web server or the computer you are using right now, must possess an IP address to connect to the Internet. Cogeco assigns your computer a temporary or dynamic IP address each time you log on.
