Technical Questions FAQ

How do Cogeco IP addresses work?

Any device connected to the Internet has an IP Address. An IP address is a numerical label assigned to each device to help identify its location within the network.

Dynamic and static IP addresses

Residential clients:
Cogeco uses a cable modem technology that works with a DHCP server. The server assigns residential clients a dynamic IP address that changes periodically.

Business clients:
Business clients can obtain a permanent IP address depending on their package.

Finding your IP address

You can find your IP address at any time on specific websites such as http://www.whatismyip.com.

You should also be able to find your IP address on your computer by following these steps:

  1. Go to the Start menu.
  2. Click Run.
  3. Enter "NCPA.CPL", then click “OK”.
  4. In the Network connections window that appears, select your corresponding network card.
  5. Depending on your Windows version, your IP address will be listed under the Support tab or by clicking on the Details button.
  6. Your IP address will be provided under label IPv4 Address.

Warning: If you use a router, this procedure will provide you with the IP address of the router, not the one used to access the Internet.

Changing your IP address

Residential clients cannot change their IP address.Residential IP addresses are dynamic, so they automatically change without notice. This is normal and does not affect your Internet service.

Some people think that changing their IP address helps protect their computer against hackers. Unfortunately, hackers can track IP address changes. To protect your computer from malicious users, we recommend Cogeco’s Security Services.

IPV6 Protocol

Cogeco is currently using IPv6 Protocol to assign IP addresses. This protocol was modelled on and replaces IPv4’s IP address exhaustion.

IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses in order to provide approximately 340.3 undecillion IP addresses, whereas IPv4 supports approximately 4.3 billion addresses.
