What to do if someone is using my phone number for fraudulent calls (spoofing)?

Telemarketers from overseas sometimes “spoof” the number and pretend to be calling from a local telephone number. They are trying to hide who they really are, and where the call is really calling from. “Spoofing” is altering the caller ID to show a different number than the one actually making the telephone call. This is frequently done to trick the person receiving the telephone call into believing that the call is either coming locally or from a trusted organization. Sometimes the telemarketers may even spoof their number to look like the same number that they are calling, or pick a real person’s number. These “spoofed” calls are happening outside of the Cogeco network.

If you receive a telemarketing call with a spoofed caller ID or a call you feel was fraudulent, then you should report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
