Your questions about the Cogeco Wi-Fi extender, answered

No, only Wi-Fi pods and extenders rented from Cogeco will work with your Wi-Fi network, even if they’re the same model.

Most of the time, 2 Wi-Fi Pods or extenders will be enough to meet your Wi-Fi needs and are recommended for homes or businesses between 1,500 and 3,000 square feet.

  • More Wi-Fi Pods or extenders may be required for homes or businesses with more than 3,000 square feet, more than 3 storeys (including a basement), or more than 3 bedrooms/offices.
  • For businesses requiring more than 4 Wi-Fi Pods or extenders, we recommend a Managed Wi-Fi solution instead so that we can send a technician to fully assess your Wi-Fi needs and set up your network. Learn more about Managed Wi-Fi.

When it comes to getting the best performance out of your Wi-Fi network, pod and extender placement is everything.

While every home or business is unique, here are some guidelines of what to aim for when choosing where to place your pods and extenders:

Choose central locations

  • If possible, place your modem in a central location to ensure the best signal distribution.
  • Place your other pods and extenders in the areas where people will be using the Internet most often.
  • We recommend 1 pod or extender for every 2 rooms, spread evenly to maximize performance. Pods and extenders usually have a range of 9 to 12 meters (30 to 40 feet) through walls.
  • Place the pods and extenders towards the centre of your home or business for better coverage, rather than on the exterior walls. This will also make it less likely people outside will be able to connect to your guest network if it isn’t password-protected.

Avoid interference

  • Wireless phone bases, large appliances and microwaves can create interference, so place your pods and extenders away from these items.
  • Reflective surfaces can also reflect the signal, so avoid placing your pods and extenders near large mirrors or windows.
  • Avoid putting your pods and extenders in closed, cramped spaces, such as cabinets, closets and drawers.

Maintain line of sight between pods and extenders

  • When possible, place your pods and extenders in a way that there’s a direct line of sight between them, since this can increase their range and help with coverage.
  • With a line of sight, pods and extenders have a range of about 18 to 24 meters (60 to 80 feet).

Connect a pod or extender through a wired connection

  • If you’re having trouble getting Wi-Fi service to a particular spot in your home or business due to interference, you can use the pod or extender’s Ethernet port to make a wired connection to your modem.

Check your connection status

Once you’re set up, you can check the connection status of each pod or extender in our Wi-Fi app.

  • The app will take some time to optimize your network so we recommend waiting until the next day to check the pod and extender status.
  • Residential customers can see this on the Adapt tab in the Cogeco Wi-Fi app.
  • Business clients can see this under Settings > Pods in the Cogeco Business Wi-Fi app.

Additional considerations for businesses

There are certain placement challenges that are more common in business setups. Consider the following if you’re placing pods and extenders in your business:

  • Businesses may have additional causes of interference, such as energy-efficient windows, metallic shades/blinds, heavy metal doors and reinforced concrete floors with HVAC ducting.
  • Pods and extenders are easy to unplug so a guest may unplug one, not realizing what it is, when looking for an outlet. Avoid placing your pods and extenders where they are physically accessible to guests and instead, put them closer to the ceiling or behind a counter.

To install and activate your Cogeco Wi-Fi Pods or extenders, follow the steps below. You can also download and print instructions for installing pods or installing extenders.

Step 1 – Ensure your modem is active

Check that your Cogeco modem is online. If you haven’t installed your modem yet, visit our installation guides.

Step 2 – Download the Cogeco Wi-Fi app and log in

  1. Download and install the Cogeco Wi-Fi app on your mobile device (available for free from the App Store or Google Play).
  2. Log in with your My Account username and password.

Step 3 – Follow the setup instructions in the app

Once you’re logged in, you can set up your network in a few easy steps:

  1. Confirm that your modem is online.

    • Depending on your modem model, it may need to be connected to the first pod or extender with an Ethernet cable. If it tells you to do this in the app, do not disconnect the pod or extender after the installation.
  2. Enter a name and password for your Wi-Fi network.

    • If you have an existing Wi-Fi network, we recommend using the same name and password so that your devices will connect to it seamlessly. If you choose to use a new name and password, make sure all of your devices are connected to it so they don’t lose service when the old network is disabled.
    • You can set up additional passwords for different levels of access after the installation. Learn more about managing your network name and password.
  3. Connect your Cogeco Wi-Fi Pods or extenders to power outlets and check the app to confirm that they all come online. The app will already know how many were sent to you and will show you when each one comes online.

The Cogeco Wi-Fi app is an easy-to-use app that lets you set up and monitor your Cogeco Wi-Fi network from your mobile device. You can check your network health at a glance, see who’s logged in throughout your home, manage your network name (SSID) and passwords, and even improve your online experience with features such as threat protection and ad blocking.

Note: The app is only compatible with Cogeco Wi-Fi Pods, extenders and certain modem models. If you need to use the app to set up your modem, this will be covered in your modem’s setup instructions. If you want to order Cogeco Wi-Fi Pods or extenders, please contact customer service.

Where can I get the Cogeco Wi-Fi app?

The Cogeco Wi-Fi app is available for free on the iOS App Store and Google Play Store.

Note: The Cogeco Wi-Fi app is made by Plume, which has a similar app called HomePass, but you must be using the Cogeco Wi-Fi app for it to work with your Cogeco service.

Wi-Fi Pods and Wi-Fi extenders require a subscription to an UltraFibre 40 Internet package or higher.

UltraFibre 1 Gig Unlimited : Up to 1 Gbps of total download speed through the combination of multiple devices including at least one wired connection (Ethernet) combined with one or multiple wireless connections to Cogeco’s 1 Gig modem. Up to 940 Mbps download speed can be achieved when connecting to one personal Internet device with one wired connection (Ethernet).

EPICO

Cogeco EPICO service provides combined access to Cogeco TV and Internet services with a subscription to Cogeco TV, an EPICO 4K Box and a minimum subscription to the UltraFibre 60 Unlimited Internet package with a Wi-Fi modem.

Download speed, upload speed, signal and picture quality can vary depending on various factors.

Channel availability may vary by region. Selected TV channels can only be modified once every 30 days. The channel lists for the pre-selected packages cannot be modified. Additional fees may apply for some channels and some channels may count for several choices. Viewing content (live or recorded) is restricted to Canada.

Channel availability for the Restart and Just Missed features may vary according to the content rights and viewing restrictions.

A separate subscription to Netflix® is required.

The EPICO app provides access to the TV channels included in the EPICO package to which the customer is subscribed. Some channels included in the EPICO package may not be available to watch out-of-home due to content rights restrictions. Viewing content is restricted to Canada.

On Demand requires a subscription to the TV package containing the associated digital channel. Purchased movies remain available as long as the customer is subscribed to the Cogeco EPICO service and as long as the title remains available in the On Demand library. Rented movies are available for the duration indicated on the screen.

Beginning November 27th, 2024, all recordings are available for a maximum of 90 days or until the termination of your EPICO service, whichever comes first. By default, older recordings will be automatically removed to match the number of hours in your block. Additional blocks of recording hours may be available to add with certain EPICO packages (up to unlimited recording capacity).

An EPICO package including an EPICO 4K Cloud PVR is required to download and view TV recordings in and out-of-home.

One EPICO 4K Cloud PVR per TV set. Each additional EPICO 4K Box or EPICO 4K Cloud PVR is available at $7 per month.

Cogeco TV service requires the rental of an HD digital receiver with a minimum subscription to the Basic Channels package. Channel availability may vary by region. TV packages and selected channels can only be modified once every 30 days. Additional fees may apply for some channels and some channels may count for many choices. The channel lists of the pre-selected packages cannot be modified. Cogeco On Demand requires a subscription to the TV package containing the associated digital channels. Requirements to watch 4K: (i) a 4K TV and 4K receiver, (ii) a subscription to the SD/HD channels corresponding to the 4K channels. 4K not available with all channels.

Access to the mobile apps requires a subscription to the TV package containing the associated digital channel. The content viewed on mobile apps requires bandwidth, which is included in the customer's Internet or cellular data package. Additional usage fees may apply if the customer exceeds the monthly data transfer capacity (GB) included in his package. Viewing content is restricted to Canada.

TiVo service from Cogeco requires: (i) the rental of a TiVo receiver, (ii) a Wi-Fi modem, and (iii) a subscription to Cogeco Internet and (iv) a TV package. Each additional TV set combined with a TiVo PVR requires the rental of a TiVo HD receiver. Installation charges may apply for additional outlets. Data traffic consumed between the TiVo boxes and the Internet to supply programming information counts towards customer’s Internet usage. Phone equipment must stay at the same address where it was initially installed in order to allow 911 to associate the call with the correct address in the event of an emergency.
